Mackerel and herring – delicious and so good for your health too!
Mackerel and herring are oil-rich fish with their firm and tasty fillets being packed full of omega-3 fatty acids.
Eating oily fish such as mackerel and herring is an important part of a healthy diet. They are an essential source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Mackerel and herring are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs). As our own bodies cannot produce these it is essential that we supplement our diet with them. The unique benefit of EFAs is their ability to form long-chain polyunsaturated fats that are used by the body for a whole range of functions, chiefly in cell repair, which maintains healthy reproductive, nervous and cardiovascular systems.
Herring and mackerel are also very versatile in the kitchen and lend themselves well to a variety of recipes and cooking techniques. Both are ideal for the barbecue and herring are also perfect for marinating and pickling.
Smoked herring, or kippers, are delicious and make a superb breakfast treat. Hot smoked mackerel is one of the most popular ways of eating mackerel and tastes great in a salad. Smoked mackerel pate is easy to make and delicious on toast.
Some of our members also produce canned mackerel in brine, olive oil, and a variety of sauces. For the ultimate healthy sandwich filler, mix a drained can of mackerel with some low-fat mayonnaise. So easy, and so tasty!
